The pine nut grows from the pinon tree. This tree grows in the dry desert regions of Southern California. Pine nuts grow in pinon pine cones. | |||||
During the first part of the winter, the cones pop open and spill their seeds on the ground. Serrano families would gather the pine nuts, take them home and roast them. The nuts were an important resource because they could be stored and eaten throughout the winter. |
