Paqootach ami' Kokiitach. 

Kwunu poyo-

tom hiiti icho'kin iip tiuvav 

Mia tamu hiinim paahacim. 

Kuwunu icho'kin poyo tom hiiti.

kwun wii' wun taaq tam puu- qoi'va',

puvaipa' ta.

"ayaup moch mana' kto'

This is my mother's story.

I.

Uh-

this earth-

long ago when it was still soft-

there were two.

Their names were-

Paqooktach and Kokitach. 

They made everything-

here on earth. 

They seem to have been supernaturally

powerful beings. 

They made everything.

One of them,

Kokiitach wanted people on their death,

after they died to come back here to

this earth.

"No,"


"because if they come back again

they could be crowded here.."

he said.

Kwunu yaam ayau'-

ama' kwun-

mi. 

Ama' Paqooktach kwun mi-

mia t haiigkwa'.

Ani-

ama' a-poit kwun qat.-

a-naamu, pumuv

aam taaq tam pumuv. 

Kwun qat aap. 

Kwun-

poyo ayau' pat icho'av 

Ayau' kwun-

oviam taaq tam chaak. 

Qai kwunu wii' wun. 

Qai kwunu unaat qat ani kwunu kui. 

"kwu'tut mukan ivi"

 Ayau' kwunu,

"Waru',"

kui kwunu.


II.

They got angry [with each other] and then-

he went [away]. 

Once he didn't go to the edge of the water-

there he went to defecate-

always. 

And then-

they said,

 "We can't do anything with him. "

"Yes but we can-

tell the Frog- 

Maybe he can swallow his feces."

he said then.

  "Yes,"

he said. 

And then-

he went

there to defecate. 

And then-

the Frog sat there-

and he swallowed his feces. 

He already knew.

Ani kwuni-

amai tqamu' hoomchi-

wiaan piaa' qa amai. 

Ama' kwunuvu' mumu'k.

Qai kwun huookp mi paat a-huubiyka'-

aangkwa' kwun saa'to'-

hawai't 

Ani-

kwunu kui,

"Qai kwu'ch cha-hamwan." 

"Waru' yangq kwu'ch-

Waqati tiu-

Mia t kwu' ama' a-saai' i munu'."

 "Waru,"

kui kwun.

aangkwa'saa'qa'

ama' Waqat aap qat-

ami' kwun munu'kin-

III

And then

they must have sent the witch

doctor to witch him.   

He got sick. 

Once he didn't go to the edge of the water-

there he went to defecate-

always. 

And then-

they said,

 "We can't do anything with him. "

"Yes but we can-

tell the Frog- 

Maybe he can swallow his feces."

he said then.

  "Yes,"

he said. 

And then-

he went

there to defecate. 

And then-

the Frog sat there-

and he swallowed his feces. 

He already knew.

Ama' Kokiitach kwun kui,

"Ovian sivia'k mumu'qa',"

kui kwunuvu' 

"Ovia nu-saa'i kwaakwa',"

kui kwun. 

Kwun mi. 

Kwun aap a-kiiv uk. 

"Ovia-n mumu'ka',"

kui kwun. 

Ani-

kwunuvu-

taaq tam koohan.

 Ama' kwunuvu tiu,

Mumu'kuin nuu'

ami' tamt Wahi'ti natai- 

Wiaaniv paayika' tiuvat a-huuviyka 

Payika' kotaat a- waaki ' wun. 

Amai t oii'v.


 IV.

Kokiitach said,

"Already surely I'm going to die,"

he said. 

"He has eaten my feces,"

he said. 

He went. 

He lay down in his house. 

"Now I'm going to die,"

he said. 

And then

he-

called the people. 

He told them

I'm dying

and you should send Coyote, that one, away to

the edge of the earth. 

Over there is a dry stick. 

He'll get it.   


5.

 "Amatunga' tamunut maahoa'niv,"

kui kwun. 

Ani Kwun-

amai Wahi'ti-m, wiaan. 

Ama, kwun mi. 

Kwun ya'i payika'. 

Yangk kwun unaan. 

"Tqamin'

hamin wun,"

Kui kwun. 

"Ni-na' tq mumu',"

kui kwun. 

(Puu-na' kwun ama'.)


V.

"You'll burn me with it,"

he said.  (Because he might - do something, he said.) 

And then-

they sent the Coyote.

He went. 

He ran off. 

But he knew. 

" Something-

something must have happened,"

he said. 

"My father must have died,"

he said. 

(He was their father.) 


 6.

 Ayau' kwun-mi. 

Kwun quaiiv hoaachk. 

Ani kwun uiitk.

 Kwun uiitk miiv. 

Kwun uiitk 

Qai kwun hiiti hihi. 

Puyaaqa' kwun hi moaa'ti 

"ovia ni-ni' mumu',"

kui kwun. 

Ama' kwun-

ya'i-

kotaati wopkin. 

Ani kwun pumia'mana'kto'. 

 Kwun-

pichui.

 Taaq tam kwunu poahu'k 

Ama' puu-na'ovia uk-

hoonav

 Ovia' mumu'. 

Ovia maahoa'n. 

Ama' kwun-

Wahi ya'i 


VI.

Then he, went. 

He climbed up on the mountain. 

And then he looked back. 

He looked back as he went. 

He looked back 

He didn't see anything. 

Suddenly he saw smoke. 

"My father has died,"

he said. 

 He ran

[and]

grabbed the stick.

 And then with it he went back. 

He arrived. 

The people were in a circle. 

Their father is already lying-

in the center. 

He has already died. 

 He is already burning. 

The-

  Coyote-ran. 


7.

Ani kwun kui,

"Widap-

apiam choropka',"

kui kwun.

 Qai

kwun

hami' ngururk.

Ama' kwun yaaya'- 

Kwun

wihaaha' n-

Ama' kwun

Hoonact aap-

chono'wun-

Kwuna-chaaq-

 puyaan-

waasu'k

Ani kwun ama'-

kiork Wahi'.

Kiorkm amai' kwun.

A-naavu' kwun amai' muto' chi'aak.


VII.

And then he said,

 "Let go

so I can go in,"

he said. 

"Move!

 Move so I can go in," he said.

 Nobody moved.

 He ran around- 

The Badger-

was standing there-

 His legs-

 were far apart.

 Then the-

 Coyote dived through.

 Now he dived through.

 His father's heart still not having burnt-

he grabbed it and swallowed it.

 He-

ran outside with it.

 Away he ran.

 He went up in the mountains.

 There is earth still being soft-

he climbed there.

 His footprints still show now.

Kwun-

amai utti-

poyo-

payika'-

nuno' kumiin. 

Amai yangk kwun munu'kin amai a-na'n a-hoor

Ama' amai' kwun payika' qat-

payika' puyaan-

Yohaayka' kui-ch- 

acham amai'.

Ovihit aapio' poahu'k aam.

Poahu'kui kwunu aam yohaam.

Ama' kwun taaq tam ani-m yoo' wuniv. 

Puu-na'ni-m puhpa' yohyo'. 


 VIII.

He-

the blood-

all-

away-

spilled from it.

 (He spilled all the blood out from it.) 

But he swallowed his father's heart.

He now lives far off-

-far away 

towards Big Bear we say now. 

Since long ago they were in a circle. 

The pines were in a circle. 

It was the people as they stood [there ] and

cried.

They were crying over their father.

Now that-

is in our songs-

the pines-

 away at Big Bear.

Now it is different-

 because some time ago they changed it.

It's not there any more. 

They all-

cleared it.

 (They cleaned it all out.)
